About our Orchestras
We are an enthusiastic and welcoming group of amateur musicians who get together on Saturday mornings to play music in a fun and friendly environment.
Rehearsals are held in Great Barrow Village Hall, near Chester and we welcome players of any instrument, of any age and with any level of experience.
We are an "open admission" orchestra - which means that there is no audition and no-one is ever turned away.
We currently have 3 separate orchestras; Introductory, Intermediate and the "Main" Orchestra, so we are sure there will be an orchestra suitable to your current level of playing.
We usually perform 2 concerts per year; one at Christmas and another prior to the summer break. We occasionally receive other invitations to perform such as at charity events and at Chester Music Society Club Evenings.
There is a small weekly subscription which can either be paid each week on arrival or by Standing Order (which will bring a slight discount). The Introductory and Intermediate Orchestra's weekly subscription is £2 and the Main Orchestra is £4. If you attend both, the fee is still £4
The Jan Modelski Community Orchestra
The original Orchestra was set up in 2001 by Director of Music and Conductor, Jan Modelski and since then has grown not only in numbers of players (currently around 50) but has also made incredible progress in terms of confidence, repertoire and standard of performance, gaining an increasing reputation in the orchestral music scene in the Chester area.
We play at least 2 concerts a year as well as additionally playing at various charity events. Our repertoire is always varied and challenging, including works by Beethoven, Mozart, Bizet, Gershwin and Elgar as well as the film music of John Williams and Hans Zimmer.
There is no entry requirement, but to give a rough indication, players are usually around Grade 5 level and above.
The rehearsal starts at 10.45 am and finishes around 1.30 pm
The Intermediate Orchestra
Due to the increase in the number of musicians coming along, a few years ago we decided to set up a new Intermediate Orchestra aimed at younger musicians, less experienced players or maybe adults who played at school and would like to return to playing as adults. It is also a natural progression for players "graduating" from the Introductory' Orchestra. There is no entry requirement but as a rough indication, players are at around Grade 2 - 4.
The rehearsal starts at 9.15 am and finishes around 10.30 am
